Celebrate “Kansas Reads to Preschoolers” month with MCPL

Submitted

Mary Cotton Public Library is celebrating “Kansas Reads to Preschoolers” month and the positive effects reading and storytime have on children’s development, whether in the library, daycare, school, on the road or at home.

This year’s Kansas Reads to Preschoolers book is “How Do You Hug a Porcupine?”, written by Laurie Isop and illustrated by Gwen Millward, and explores how one child learned to carefully hug a porcupine.

MCPL is happy to be able to provide a copy of this book to 50 families of preschoolers.

Books will be distributed at Storytime and Preschool Outreach during the month of November. The books were donated by Northeast Kansas Auto Enthusiasts.

About Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Month

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is celebrated each November and encourages parents, librarians and caregivers across the state to read the chosen book with their preschoolers. The Kansas Center for the Book, a part of the State Library of Kansas, selects a committee of librarians and educators to identify picture books suited to reading aloud and then suggests titles to the State Librarian, Ray C. Walling, who makes the final selection.

“Reading to preschoolers is a fun and important way to contribute to early child development ” Walling said. “Even the youngest children benefit from reading because it helps shape their learning and language, while connecting them with new experiences and the people who read with them — parents, librarians, caregivers and teachers. Kansas parents can find valuable resources and programs to support early childhood learning at their local public library.”

The State Library of Kansas offers public and school libraries the opportunity to receive a free copy of the Kansas Reads to Preschoolers title to add to their collection and to use during events in November.

Visit MCPL to check out “How Do You Hug a Porcupine?” and other great picture books to share with the young children in your life.
